New Mars Energy Profile Offers Insights Into Planetary Climate Dynamics
A newly published study in AGU Advances, also featured in EOS, reveals a groundbreaking meridional radiant energy budget (REB) profile for Mars, marking the first of its kind for the planet. The work, led by researchers including Guan, offers valuable comparisons between Martian and Earth climate systems and establishes a critical foundation for Martian meteorology.

The profile, derived from long-term data collected by orbiting spacecraft, reveals significant differences between the two planets' energy balances. Unlike Earth, which experiences an energy surplus in the tropics and a deficit at the poles, Mars exhibits the opposite configuration, with a polar energy surplus and a tropical energy deficit.

"On Earth, the energy surplus in the tropics drives atmospheric warming and upward motion, while the polar deficit causes cooling and downward motion," explained Jiang. "These atmospheric movements have a direct impact on Earth’s weather and climate. Mars, however, shows an energy distribution that results in a polar surplus and tropical deficit."

One of the most significant findings concerns Mars' southern hemisphere, where the energy surplus is particularly pronounced during the spring season. This imbalance plays a key role in driving Mars' atmospheric circulation and triggering global dust storms—massive weather events that can engulf the entire planet. These dust storms are a central feature of Martian weather, altering energy distribution and influencing the planet’s climate.

"The interplay between dust storms, the REB, and polar ice dynamics highlights the complex feedback processes that shape Martian weather and potentially influence its long-term climate stability," Guan noted.

While Earth’s global energy imbalance has been linked to global warming, Mars provides a unique case study due to its thinner atmosphere and absence of human-driven climate impacts. The research team is now exploring how potential long-term energy imbalances on Mars could impact the planet’s climate evolution.

"The differences in REB between Earth and Mars are fascinating," said Li. "Continued monitoring and research will further enhance our understanding of Mars' climate and provide valuable insights into atmospheric processes across planetary bodies."
